Holiday Cottage

West Ilkerton is a secluded hill farm bordering some of the most beautiful moorland on Exmoor, a few miles from the coastal resorts of Lynton and Lynmouth.

With its friendly atmosphere, superb location and warm, comfortable accommodation, West Ilkerton is an ideal base for exploring Exmoor National Park and North Devon at any time of year.

We have converted half of our Grade 11 listed farmhouse into a very comfortable self-contained holiday cottage which is furnished to a high standard while retaining the character of an old Devon farmhouse.

The farm dates back to the Domesday Book and beyond.

The living room
Our guests enjoy walking, riding, falconry, fishing, cycling, playing golf, shooting, going to the beach, surfing, sightseeing, shopping and eating out, helping on the farm and — most important — relaxing. The romantic king-size four-poster bed in the master bedroom makes the cottage very popular for honeymoons, too.

THE FARM

*Traditional working farm with Exmoor Horn sheep, North Devon cattle, Exmoor ponies and horses.

*Guests are welcome to join in with farm life when it is possible. In the summer, all the animals are out in the fields. The cows are housed in the shed from November to March, and the sheep are housed for lambing during April.

*There are several way-marked walks from the farm, with direct access to open moorland.

Payphone: A dedicated line is provided. The number is (01598) 752728. The telephone will take incoming calls. If you are staying with us, give this number to your family and friends. Reception for mobiles is poor from the farm.
Wireless broadband: Visitors are welcome to access our wireless broadband system for responsible use with their own laptops.
Heating: Oil-fired central heating for up to eight hours a day (times agreed on arrival, and duration negotiable in bad weather). There are electric heaters upstairs and downstairs, which can be used at any time. The central heating is usually turned off in the summer, but it can be turned on if guests need it. The kitchen has electric under-floor heating.
Electricity: Mains supply. Please turn off electric appliances when not in use.
Water: Private borehole for water, with a UV filter for drinking water. The Council tests our water annually. Hot water in the downstairs bathroom and kitchen is heated by an immersion heater which can be controlled from the cottage. Hot water in the upstairs bathroom comes from the boiler in the farmhouse.
Children welcome. Stair gates on the stairs. Fenced play area outside the back door. High chair, travel cot (L125cm, W65cm) and baby bath available free of charge. Books, toys and games, including table football provided. Table tennis in summer.
Accessibility The cottage is not really suitable for people with mobility problems. All the bedrooms are upstairs, and there is no walk-in shower (the downstairs bathroom has a bath with shower over).

Pets welcome. Please see our booking conditions.

We welcome well-behaved pets by arrangement. Dogs are the most usual pets but goldfish, hamsters, cats, stick insects and budgies have stayed at West Ilkerton. No charge is made but we do expect owners to keep their pets under control at all times (no dogs chasing our cats or sheep, please!) and ensure that they do not climb on the furniture. A mop, bucket, floor cloths and a good vacuum cleaner are provided so that owners can clean away all the mud and hairs shed by their pets in the cottage.
Horses can usually be accommodated from May to October. The cost varies according to the number of horses and what is required. Please ask.

We don't mind pets staying if we can't tell they've been here. Please clean up after your pet and hoover up any hairs shed in the cottage. We have three hours to clean the entire cottage between bookings, so we really don't want to clean up after your pet, especially when it has stayed for free!

Garden There are no formal gardens at West Ilkerton — I’ve given up planting things for the animals to eat! However, there is an area of grass in front of the holiday cottage with teak garden furniture and a home-made barbecue. There are stunning views up the valleys to the high moors from here. For a more private spot for sunbathing and reading, there is an area of grass and trees above the house. There is a grass area for children outside the back door, with a picnic table and a couple of sun loungers.

During the spring there are lots of daffodils around the house, and in summer there are hanging baskets full of flowers in the courtyard.

Whatever the weather, a warm welcome awaits you at West Ilkerton
